Tod's handbags' designer first started the shoe business in 1978 in the Le Marche region of Italy. Interestingly enough, the very first name of the label was not Tod's. It was actually J.O Tod's which was inspired from the Boston (US) area phone book. As the name has increasingly grown with plain Tod's, the designer Diego Della Valle dropped "J.P".

Celebrity fans of the label are Yasmin Le Bon, Sharin Stone, Cate Blanchett, the late Princess Diana, Emmy Rossum, Denise Rishards, Elizabeth Hurley and of course, the face of Tod's label, Gwyneth Paltrow.
