Explaining his reasoning for making the expensive and beautiful artwork, the German born head of Chanel tells Fashion Wire Daily, "There are so many films about Chanel being made this year. I thought it only right we make one. And with the Internet and thus people looking at silent images all the time, a silent movie seemed right. No?"

"It's a funny movie, unpretentious," said Mr Lagerfeld. "Chanel was a charming woman, at liberty to seduce men. Everybody this year has decided to make a movie about Chanel, and you know their historical worth is not always too exact."

The film tells the story of Coco's love affair with Duke Dimitri Pavlovich. The decision to shoot in black and white is sure to add an air of authenticity to the work, which is set between 1913 and 1923.
The film features model turned actresses Edita Vilkeviciute as a young beautiful Coco as well as fetish model Brad Koenig playing the Grand Duke, muse Lady Amanda Harlech, a wealthy client in the film, and favourite DJ Michel Gaubert.
The screening of the film took place right before the unveiling of Chanel's pre-fall collection, which was filled with Russian influences highlighted by the film.
The 10 minute silent film will make its world premiere at Paris' Ranelagh Theatre tonight to coincide with the launch of the Chanel Paris-Moscow pre-fall collection.
Coco Before Chanel (Coco Avant Chanel)
Meanwhile, under Karl Lagerfeld's supervision, Warner Bros. will produce and finance “Coco Before Chanel” (”Coco Avant Chanel“) a biopic of legendary French fashion designer Coco Chanel which is based on book by Edmonde Charles-Roux “L’irreguliere.”

Production will begin next month in Paris under the direction of Anne Fontaine. Her adaptation of “L’irreguliere” will focus on Chanel’s early years. Fontaine co-wrote the script with Camille Fontaine and Christopher Hampton.
The four-month shoot was planned to release on 2009.
Audrey Tautou has been signed to portray Chanel, who was credited with revolutionising women’s fashion in the 20th century.
The director said in a statement:
“Audrey Tautou embodies all the qualities that made Coco such a fascinating individual, and the support we’ve received from The House of Chanel is incredibly gratifying.”
