Born in Africa, Jas Sehmbi (

He completed an art foundation at East Ham College in Stratford and just three months later began retailing small leather and canvas bags. He then went on to designing as well as retailing and opening his first shop in Ilford in 1985.
A trip in 1988 to the tanneries of Italy cultivated Jas’s love of leather. In 1993 Jas established his name as a leading accessories designer when he created the first ever DJ bag. In 1994 he made his first bag by hand finishing substandard deliveries, which led to the production of 30,000 nylon bags in six months enabling him to fund his two labels entitled Spaced Out and W11.

“I wanted to see guys carrying bags in the UK”, Sehmbi recalls and upon his return to the UK in the early 90’s he subsequently launched the Jas M.B. line initially only for men. It’s pace quickened when in September 2000 Barneys and cult fashion store YMC placed orders, which subsequently sold out in the first day. This boom continued in Tranoi in Paris 2001 at both men’s and women’s shows.
